Eizo LCD vs. NEC LCD

Before my friend Otto asked me to weigh-in on the “Eizo vs. NEC” debate, I hadn’t thought about buying a new monitor in over a year. It seems that they both push the envelope in the RGB gamut, but one has better specs for photographers.

I just watched this video about EIZO CG211 vs. NEC LCD2690WUXi:

Well, without seeing them A/B, I can’t say for sure. I’m intrigued by the weightiness of the NEC gamut, especially in the blue region. I’m not sure how Otto processes his raw files, but I have been processing mine in ProPhoto RGB. If you’ve ever done gamut comparisons, as seen in this youtube video, you’ll know that ProPhoto has similar weight in the blues.

ProPhoto is how I process, because I believe you get less “roll-off” in the shadows, but I’ve never seen any perceptible difference between ProPhoto and AdobeRGB on my monitor, an Apple Cinema display. So, if I’m correct, I may actually see more warm/cool in the shadows while I process my RAW.

Otto, an event photographer, spends a fair amount of time in post-processing, and gets amazing results without any location lighting gear. He generally uses available light, so I’m guessing that he also spends a his fair share of time tweaking warm/cool color curves, and pulling the channels into phase. If that L.A.B/cie map isn’t distorted, that’s a pretty FAT blue gamut for any display. You might be able to SEE clipping or roll off in your shadows! I really can’t wait to see one. If NEC wants to send me one, I shall gladly test it!
